Cold spark: how to run pyrotechnic effects inside a venue

Yes, pyrotechnics can be done indoors safely: the most common solution is cold spark, an effect that produces bright spark fountains at low temperature, with no sustained flame or excess smoke. That is why it works in halls, theaters and stages where traditional pyrotechnics would not be viable.

What cold spark is

Cold spark (also called indoor pyrotechnics) generates columns of sparks that look similar to a firework, but at a much lower temperature. The spark cools so quickly that, at the point of dispersion, it does not pose the same burn or fire risk as conventional pyrotechnics.

Why it is safe for enclosed spaces

• Low temperature: the effect is visually powerful but thermally controlled.
• No excess smoke: it does not saturate the venue or trigger fire systems the way dense smoke would.
• Professional operation: installation, safety distances and coordination with the venue are handled by trained staff.

None of these advantages replace protocols: a safe event always requires permits, insurance and experienced personnel.

Are indoor fireworks safe?

Yes, when the effect is designed for enclosed spaces and operated by a licensed crew. This is the question we get most often, so here is the direct answer.

Conventional fireworks are not safe indoors: they burn hot, produce sustained flame and fill a room with smoke. Cold spark is a different product built for exactly this problem. The spark you see is bright, but its temperature is low enough that it does not ignite fabric, staging or decor on contact, and it produces very little smoke.

The practical consequence is the one venues care about: cold spark does not set off smoke detectors or sprinkler systems the way conventional pyrotechnics do. That is what makes it viable in a hotel ballroom, a theater or a convention center.

Safety still depends on three things that are not negotiable:

• Ceiling height. This is the real limit indoors, not the effect itself. The fountain needs clear vertical space above it.
• Coordination with the venue. Their fire-safety team has to know what is being fired, where and when.
• A trained operator. The equipment is safe; an untrained operator with safe equipment is not.

How do indoor fireworks work?

A cold spark machine does not burn gunpowder. It heats a granulated metallic powder electronically and pushes it upward, so the particles glow and fall as a shower of bright sparks.

That difference is the whole point. There is no combustion of an explosive charge, so there is:

• no detonation and no noise beyond the machine itself,
• no sustained flame,
• no dense smoke to ventilate afterwards,
• no fallout of hot debris on the audience.

Because the output is controlled electronically, the height and duration of each fountain can be set precisely and fired on timecode, in sync with music, lighting and video over DMX. A conventional firework, once lit, does what it does.

When to use it

Indoor pyrotechnics are ideal for corporate events, launches, award ceremonies, stage presentations and ballroom weddings. It can be synced with music and lighting to reinforce a key moment, an artist walking out, a product reveal or the close of a ceremony.

For open spaces and mass audiences, aerial pyrotechnics remains the highest-impact option.
